Today in a creative writing workshop we were asked to write a poem about one of our names, where it came from, what it means…

I chose my middle name, which is Eilish, Irish for Elizabeth. Here is the poem.

Far away from green lands,
with hunched hills
and frozen waterfalls,
over the short stretch of sea,
between this place and that.
Travelling through the day,
to English soil and flat grounds.
Where the green lands are grey
and the people work all day.
Over the sea came this name,
this name I was born with in the middle,
of the rest. Beginning with an ‘E’
and ending with a ‘Shhh’…
